If you love your data, back it up (twice)
I have a long history of using google photos, and while the export story isn't perfect, I continue to upload my photos there, but also download them every three months via https://takeout.google.com/
I'm currently using ios as my primary mobile device, and am using https://github.com/icloud-photos-downloader/icloud_photos_downloader via docker to continuously backup my icloud collection to my local nas.
