They’re “scratching their own itch” by creating tools that they, themselves, use and depend on.
Most software though is used by people with no desire to dig into code, tweak YAML files, etc. Consumer stuff in particular usually benefits from a singular vision from a handful of UX designers — not a group of programmer volunteers.
