Nip 42 (AUTH) is dumb. It's easily gamed by a proxy service doing the authentication and pushing the events of others onto it.
Unless you also do event author checking in which case you're doing exactly what was already done in the first place for paid relays.
The only thing it solves is the authenticated reading problem. Until another relay comes along as a paid user to copy down your DB and offer up the service for free.
Pay per use. That's the only way forward.
