Representatives are elected by the people, which makes it a democratic republic. Res + publicae is the origin of the word. That’s Latin for “thing of the people”.
Unless you mean changing a constitutional democrat republic into an oligarchical “republic” (pro forma, it’s not actually a republic, like the People Republic of East Germany, that kind of crap), your representatives get appointed to cut taxes, make rich men happy, and fuck the rest.
