i'm sure there were doubters in prehistory too but that doesn't change the fact that humans seem to have always had some framework of spirituality and i daresay that the doubters are often worse off for doubting
also materialism can't explain thoughts and emotions as merely a product of the electrochemical interactions of neurotransmitters, it's tried for decades
