yes it uses email and they've made some huge advancements in the overall UX in the last year. I've been testing with my own server and the speed of chats is faster than anything else (but all parties are natively on that same mail server)
With federation you have a slight delay between mail providers but it's not too big a deal. Unless somehow you get greylisted I suppose haha ššš
