Do Americans have much of an interest in the Death of Princess Diana?

Like was it a big thing over there at the time?

What was the reaction of the average American if and when they heard the news about her death?

I am aware that there is a subsection of America that is interested in the comings and goings of Harry and Megan whatserface (Harry being Diana's son of course, unless he isn't ;) ), but I should be interested to know did this interest in royals exist further back in time or if it is strictly a modern day phenomenon.

Don't ask me why I am interested in knowing this because I'm not sure myself, save perhaps that a certain morbid curiosity regarding her untimely demise has been intruding on me all day.
