The National High Electoral Commission in Libya announced yesterday the start of the voting process for the first round of local council elections in the country, with the selection of 58 local councils distributed across 352 polling stations and 777 voting centers. The commission stated in a statement that polling stations opened at 9:00 am yesterday and will remain open until 6:00 pm, as part of a four-year electoral cycle in each municipality, with both individual and list-based voting systems. The commission expects over 186,000 voters to cast their ballots, comprising registered voters in the municipal council lists. The commission urged all registered voters to 'assume their responsibilities, head to their polling stations, and exercise their right to vote and choose their representatives in the local council.' It also called on organizations monitoring the elections and candidates' representatives to 'adhere to the systems established for performing their duties, follow the rules governing the observation and monitoring of the electoral process within polling stations, and comply with instructions issued by polling station heads to ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process and prevent any breaches that may occur during the elections. The UN Special Representative for Support, Stephanie Turco Williams, stated during her attendance at the announcement of the local elections, 'Comprehensive, transparent, and credible elections are a means to strengthen the social contract between Libyan state institutions and the people,' emphasizing that this experience demonstrates that holding elections is possible in Libya as a tool for peaceful transfer of power. She urged all registered voters, including women, youth, people with disabilities, and cultural components in targeted municipalities, to actively participate in this democratic practice.
