6/ For decades, conscripts have been subject to extreme and often lethal forms of hazing and abuse, known as 'dedovshchina' (literally 'reign of the grandfathers'). In 2006, at least 292 Russian soldiers were killed as a direct result of dedovshchina. It also has indirectly lethal effects: 341 soldiers died by suicide in 2007.
