You could try to argue that *teeeechnicallyyyyyyy* a fedi instance doesn't count because its *primary* purpose is to facilitate communication between its own users and users of *other* "website[s] or applications[s]" (instances). But even if that flies, your opponent could then say that that's an argument that the entire fediverse is one big social media platform.
