I'm from Canada but it's basically the same thing; it's the legacy of imperialism and colonialism.
You can't create a new country, let alone a new world, based on domination, depredation, and deprivation. Sure, at one time there were massive ecological surpluses that trickled down to the colony, but as those surpluses have fallen, the logic of domination has become more apparent and the ideology that excused it far less effective.
