I'm no big fan of Macron. I consider him elitist and detached from people, and his gradual shift from progressive to more conservative positions (he and Starmer have become the best representatives of the "bash your leftwing allies rather than the nihilist proto-fascists on the right" political school), together with his political games to extend his power in spite of his unpopularity, have alienated many.
But credit is due when it's due. Even though he probably won't be remembered for his achievements or popularity at home, very few politicians in Europe have his acumen, lucidity, ambition and boldness when it comes to foreign policy and vision for the EU.
I've been repeating a lot in these days that Trump's continuous attacks against academia, culture, educated expats and anything he perceives as "woke" (whatever that means) were a golden opportunity for Europe to erode America's cultural hegemony, compete directly with them to drain the best brains out of that fascist cesspit, provide a shelter to the oppressed, just like America a century ago provided a shelter to the likes of Einstein, Oppenheimer, Fermi and Von Neumann escaping the fascist horrors in Europe, and eventually leave America as the intellectually and industrially barren and desolate wasteland that it wants (and deserves) to be.
Macron seems to agree with this stance, and he's prompting a call to all scientists and researchers looking for a safe place to conduct their studies to move to France and Europe.
I wish that more politicians on my continent were as lucid as him in recognizing that America has permanently changed, that treating them as allies and negotiate with them is no longer an option, and that we have to act fast to compete with them and drain their vital lymph before other international powers do.
The spectacle of politicians on the European right that refuse to acknowledge this simple truth, and instead try to court the madman in the White House seeking for exceptions, personal deals and privileged positions as "diplomatic bridges" is instead quite pathetic.
You don't seek for diplomacy with a fascist and unreliable madman with evident mental issues. Or you'll be labelled as the collaborationist with a fascist regime when he falls. You just seek to bash him at every chance you've got, reap him of any wealth that he squanders through his imbecility, and eventually prepare for his unavoidable violent demise.
