Pederasty was so common and accepted in pre-Christian Europe that there existed a cult centered around the worship of the youthful boyfriend of Hadrian.
Hadrian first met Antinous as a child while passing through his hometown in Anatolia, aged around 11. Entranced by his beauty, he brought him back to Rome to be his lover.
Antinous died under mysterious circumstances by drowning in the river Nile, aged around 18. Although it is largely believed that the death was accidental, there is some speculation that Antinous sacrificed himself in a ritual, possibly anxious about the fact that he could not remain Hadrian's lover, as he was becoming a man.
Hadrian, stricken by grief, immediately established the city of Antinoöpolis at his place of death and deified his late lover. The cult immediately spread throughout the Roman empire, which is indicative of just how accepted pederasty was in Roman society.
The cult of Antinous lasted between 2 or 3 centuries and rivaled early Christianity in popularity. After Christians outlawed paganism, the cult died.
Christian writers, such as the self-castrating eunuch cuck Origen, in keeping with their Jewish moral code, condemned the worship of Antinous on account of his homosexuality.
The Judeo-Christian hatred and persecution of homosexuality persisted throughout European history. In medieval Europe, both boys and men who were caught having sexual relations with one another were burnt to death.
