I make this point about Star Trek all the time. Gene Roddenberry was a pilot in WWII then became a police officer. The USS Enterprise feels like a real naval vessel because Roddenberry and almost every other writer for the show - including Harlan Ellison! - had some military experience.
Most writers for subsequent shows have experience watching old Star Trek and not much else.
