Its rather distinct and is akin in percentages to Russia in much the same way as Dutch is to English (around 65% shared language). The closest language to Ukrainian is actual Belarusian which comes in at around 85%. This linguistic change came about through Russia from the top down adding more French words into the Russian language during the 18th and 19th Century.
