I don’t possess the vocabulary to put it correctly in words, but there’s something more “real” about this kind of virtual world with such things as virtual bus stops, than (at least with the current tech) “virtual reality”.
It’s also, unlike daily quests for example, a time waster but it’s not there to pad out time for the game.
