Grandpa talked to anybody that came down our farm road in Southwest Texas. He knew German and some Spanish, too. Handy since, even then, white people in that part of the country were in the minority. Mexico was only about an hour drive west.
They were always just "passing through", going toward San Antonio.
But you had to be careful. Some people hungry enough to steal chickens.
