anyway I have a good stable setup for the data store and the syncing, that works great. a couple three years ago I assayed a bunch of apps and settled on Baikal (web-based backing store) + DAVx5 (sync) + aCalendar (Android calendar) + Tasks.org (Android tasks) and it all works great.
what I do *not* have is a good desktop or web solution, the latter of which needs to run on the same penny host as Baikal.
