Most people cannot differentiate volatility from risk. I honestly think it is as simple as that, and it means people will ignore or misunderstand bitcoin until it has at least flipped gold.
If you want to put the tin foil hat on, it would be psyops to make people hate it longer so "they" can get in position. I don't know if I believe that but retail will never get a free ride.
