The wasp reappeared so I was able to get this fabulous photo. The face is yellow, so my confidence in ID has gone from 90% to 99%.
My garden is very much not a sand cliff but there are plenty of those nearby. [Though no records there for this species.]
This strongly suggests 'refuelling station', which was the point of the meadow all along.
We need millions of them in gardens and elsewhere.
