They have bought into the Gospel of Prosperity, that if you have wealth it's because you deserve it and if you're poor, you deserve that too. It's helped a lot by the sort of unconscious racism that runs throughout much of America. They have never had to confront their biases, because they don't interact with minorities much. They don't get their world view challenged much. So they are less comfortable with changing their opinions on something.
