I left the conference and caught a taxi to To Kwa Wan station. I was still not feeling so great but went into the wet market anyway, quickly forced to avert my senses from the stench and sight of hanging meat and offal under the harsh fluorescent lights. Live chickens pecked at each other in their rusting cages on the ground and everything was covered in a thick stinking humidity.
I got out of there and walked under the looming highway of Chatham Road, past the Ko Shan cinema and back towards my apartment. I was reminded of another Chatham Road in my hometown of Flaxmere, nothing more than a long stretch of farmland and a huge rugby paddock lined with macrocarpas and the sound of pukekos.
