I write open source software on an open source permissionless protocol. Relays are only centralized if you choose to, if you want to only use the Damus relay, then you're choosing to give jb55 (npub1xts…kk5s) authority over what content you can publish or see.
If you're so concerned about this issue, i strongly recommend you setup a relay, i recommend: https://github.com/hoytech/strfry
And develop a plugin to strfry that rejects all kind 1984 events.
