Today is a good day to contact the health minister:

Dear Hon Streeting,

I am writing to express my dismay at learning that puberty blockers have been banned. It is very extraordinary to learn that a minister has decided to sidestep the normal NHS processes to ban the use of a medication being prescribed to a minority population. Because this is still available to cis children, its hard to see this as anything other than politically motivated and not based on health.

Earlier in your career, you gave speeches in support of trans young people, so your flip flop on this is heartbreaking. I am not your constituent, but live very near your district and have heard from many that you have been an excellent local MP. As a member of the Labour party, I was initially happy to hear of your promotion and honestly, I feel betrayed that you've capitulated to the far right. If labour were hanging on by a thread, this would at least be understandable, but we won by a landslide.

You and I both grew up in an era when being an lgbt youth was tough and I'm sure we both remember the "it gets better" campaign. So how can we let things get worse? How can you participate in this? What's the point of gaining political power if its used to hurt people?

In the States, the Democrats lost because they alienated the youth vote. I can't help but see this as alienating. Perhaps the party leadership think they're letting the wind out of the far right's sails, but by capitulating, in fact, they're making the strongest possible case for a future with Prime Minister Farrage.

This is an absolute disgrace. I hope the PLP comes to its senses before any more children die.

Best Regards,
Charles
