Niels Bohr was the great atomic structure and quantum theory physicist. He conceived the Principle of Complementarity:

For a photon or electron, it is impossible to observe both the wave and particle aspects simultaneously. Together, however, they present a fuller description.

Bohr applied the Principle of Complementarity to not only physics, but all important issues of life.

"Bohr was the incarnation of complementarity, the insistence that every important issue has an opposite side that appears as mutually exclusive with the other. The understanding of the question becomes possible only if the existence of both sides is recognised". - Edward Teller

Bohr suggested complementarity could illuminate the mind-body problem,
It might provide for the difference between organic and inorganic matter,
It could underlie other classic dualisms like subject/object, reason versus passion and even free volition versus causality.

After experiences during a trip to China, Bohr adopted the yin yang symbol as part of his family coat of arms (when he was knighted in 1947).
