Hyphael Life Span

The hyphae of plant associated fungi are continuously growing and dying. It appears that hyphae live for only days or weeks before being sloughed off to be entombed in the soil. The continuous growth of fungal hyphae converts more labile (short lived) carbon into a more recalcitrant (long lived) format.

This is a major pathway for carbon to enter the soil and reside there long term.
