So I have some opinions on #TheCrow (2024). I knew it was bad going in, so that’s not the problem, not really.

The main critique I have is: if they had just ditched the baggage of evoking one of the best movies ever, The Crow (1994), this could have been good. A nice little #emo urban fantasy thing.

I mean, there’s a lot wrong with this movie. (Which is fascinating, since for any studio film, so, so many people have to say “yes” all along the way.)

But if Lionsgate et al. just had the wisdom to divorce it from the movie and the graphic novel, and barely touched up the mythology, these characters would have at least had a chance to stand on their own.

I’m reminded of other non-burdened, standalone movies like Barbarian (2022) (also with Bill Skarsgård) and Smile (2022). This could have been in that pantheon of 2020s good-to-great supernatural #horror films.
