Women have always been told they must look their best, says Megan Nolan in The Daily Telegraph. Perhaps the best example is Marta Gorick. A US nurse, she was travelling from England to Africa in January 1943 when her ship was sunk in the Atlantic. She spent a terrifying night in a lifeboat, the next day a British destroyer appeared. “I put on my rouge, lipstick and powder before being picked up,” she recalled, “thinking I might look at least a little bit glamorous, although worn-looking.”
