The Sharjah (Union) confirmed that experts who contributed to the historical dictionary of the Arabic language have emphasized the importance of this major dictionary as an achievement for all Arabs, as it achieves a qualitative leap in documenting the Arabic language and serves current and future generations. They pointed out that the project involved a team of 780 participants from 20 Arab institutions, including linguistic, university, and research centers, to achieve comprehensive documentation through 127 volumes containing 12,141 roots and 348,406 references from the Quran, Hadith, poetry, and prose, totaling around 14 million words. This was announced during a special conference to announce the achievements of the Arabic historical dictionary, held as part of the Sharjah International Book Fair 2024, with the participation of Muhammad Hassan Khalifa, a member of the Arabic Language Academy's Board of Directors, Dr. Muhammad Safi al-Mustaghanmi, the General Secretary of the Arabic Language Academy and Executive Director of the dictionary, and Dr. Muhammad al-Saud, a university professor and head of the Jordanian team. The speakers praised the efforts of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in completing the project despite the challenges it faced, emphasizing that his unlimited support and guidance in using the latest technologies played a crucial role in facilitating and accelerating the project's completion, reflecting his vision for preserving and developing the Arabic language and his faith in the importance of this project for the Arab nation as a whole. They also emphasized that this achievement is a linguistic and cultural heritage for future generations and ensures the Arabic language a leading position among world languages. In his opening remarks, Muhammad Hassan Khalifa, a member of the Arabic Language Academy's Board of Directors, expressed his pride in this project, which contributes to preserving the Arabic language and its cultural heritage. He pointed out that the historical dictionary is not just a documentation of words, but a tracing of their roots from their first use in pre-Islamic times to the modern era. On the other hand, Dr. Muhammad Safi al-Mustaghanmi, General Secretary of the Arabic Language Academy and Executive Director of the dictionary, explained that what prevented the completion of a project of this magnitude in the past was its sheer size and the need for modern technologies, which provided the possibility of achieving this feat in a short time. He added: 'The difference between general dictionaries and the historical dictionary lies in that the former lists the meanings and connotations of each Arabic word, while the latter records the development of these words from their first use in ancient inscriptions and manuscripts to the modern era.' For his part, Dr. Muhammad al-Saud, head of the Jordanian team, highlighted the importance of the dictionary in creating a new linguistic terminology in sciences, thought, and culture, and emphasized the crucial role of scholars and experts who worked tirelessly to produce this dictionary. The speakers emphasized that one of the project's main goals is to disseminate this achievement among young generations, as the historical dictionary is now available through an electronic application that facilitates research, in addition to the dictionary's electronic site and the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy's website. They also pointed out that His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah has launched the 'GPT' project, which uses artificial intelligence technology to facilitate interaction with the dictionary and allows everyone to access meanings and vocabulary with ease, enhancing the status of the Arabic language and making it accessible to all in modern ways.
