I had never heard this story before, even though I knew a bit about maritime disasters after helping research a book on the Titanic. The Sultana riverboat was the worst maritime disaster in US history, killing around 1,200 people. It happened the day after Lincoln was shot, and was carrying freed Union soldiers north, and was the result of greed, as the ship was only designed for 376 passengers, not the over 2,000 on board.
