We had a quite cold but very brief weather event last winter — temp down to minus-20F, minus-29C, with fierce winds — and it seems to have killed or damaged many of the new year's buds. The trees leafed out but the leaves were few & often stunted. *Then* came the secondary buds, and the leaves are much larger than normal. Variegated or non-green-pigmented leaves in this 2nd batch are mostly all green. The new no-normal!
