The most gratifying aspect to me of the chair, dean, provost, and president evaluations was the fairness faculty members showed in their answers to multiple-choice items and in their typewritten comments. They were not out to get anyone, except in rare instances when there was a serious performance problem. In many cases, the evaluation results led to improvements over the years as persons evaluated took faculty evaluations to heart and became better leaders. Some chairs and deans were replaced during my career, and the survey results almost surely played a role in some of those decisions. But those replacements were necessary, and infrequent, as they should have been. (4/5)
