2000s era Internet was peak because there was no authoritative answer to things anywhere. You had to dig through search results to find answers. You had to ask on forums. You knew that some people were trolling you, even leaders on forums and chat rooms. Even Wikipedia was usually just a springboard for you to go find other sources for something.
To survive on the internet in that time required critical thinking. The modern internet is all wired around not thinking at all.
