The U.S. democracy promotion organization Freedom House stated that political rights and civil liberties in the Americas again suffered “erosion” in 2024 despite being one of the freest regions in the world. Thus, they consider that Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti are still considered not free countries, while Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay are partially free and the rest free. The organization also said that “Twelve of the 35 countries recorded declines in the overall score”, especially Nicaragua, El Salvador and Venezuela, and others improved, especially Guatemala, the annual report notes.
