There used to be only 18 individual black-footed ferrets in the wild. A mix of a specialized breeding program and reintroduction, maintaining and restoring habitat, and even cloning one male helped get that number to over 1000 today.
However captive breeding has to be really supervised, and lineages are registered. When people get their hands on shit, they enjoy breeding in mutations and inbreeding to get more of this shit that wouldn't help in the wild.
First image is a wild ferret. The rest is shit we did, and why we can't just let out the PetSmart ferrets into the woods.
