The molecule known as ethylene is responsible for the reddening process that occurs in tomatoes. Ethylene has no discernible smell or taste and cannot be seen or smelled by the naked eye. When the tomato has reached the appropriate degree of green maturity, it will begin producing ethylene. 😂
