Last then invites readers to share their "earliest public memories" and how those have affected us. Because I am not a paid subscriber to Last's site, I can't respond there. What I'd have said:
I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s in the US South as the civil rights struggles became intense. Quite specifically, I was born and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, until my family left there in 1958.
I remember the Central High crisis in 1957.
