It's been rumored for many years that the reason we built the ARPANET, which evolved directly into the Internet you see today, was not actually to support Department of Defense research efforts, but in truth to spread the godlike aspects of cats. As someone who was involved with ARPANET since its very early days at ARPANET site #1 at UCLA, I can confirm this rumor.
