The way I see it, that was a device used in the 1980s (MORE THAN 35 YEARS AGO DAMMIT) attempting to repesent works that at the tine were cobsidered "timeless" by highbrow western-centric culture. Of course Gene Roddenberry wouldn't know that mainstream society would atomise into a millions of subcultures and that 21st century readings of it would perceive that aspect as seriously outdated.
