I'd say that's a bit narrow angle of view, and somewhat inaccurate as well. It's a bit short-sighted to claim that peace and prosperity didn't exist at all anywhere in Europe 200 or so years ago, or that the arrival of democratic republics ended all wars. Historical facts simply do not support that claim.
Besides, the EU was originally born as a free trade union but as usual, bureaucrats & politicians end up inflating and ruining everything.
