Planning for Winter in May

In Vermont, where we used to live, the time between the loss of leaves and the snow sticking around was known as “stick season” because the deciduous trees dominating the landscape are brown sticks against a gray sky. In the past this has been my least favorite time of year.

This winter was slightly better as our current location has many more evergreen trees that retain their needs / foliage year round, however who doesn’t love a pop of color in January / February in the garden?

Witch hazel is a shrub with varieties native to North America that blooms a golden yellow in mid to late winter. The spidery flowers instantly brighten the landscape in the height of winter.

In February I ordered 25 bare root plants from the state’s environmental department for $1 / plant. We picked them up last week and spent Saturday planting them around the forest in spots that receive either summer sun or winter sun. Deer resistant, we’re excited to see which ones take off in the coming years.
