Ack, I don't know what's going on there! The second URL is correct; I just re-checked it and tried it out using a laptop browser that isn't logged in to Medium, and the entire story opened fine
Maybe try it on a laptop/desktop instead of mobile? Pain in the butt, I realize, but it may be that there's some weirdness going on in the mobile environment
