Hmm… here in the UK back in the 80s we had (at a state funded high school) religious studies (RE) were we studied both the beliefs and practices of most of the popular religions, my niece informs me the situation was much the same in noughties.
RE was mandatory at my school for the first three years, elective after that (when we start focusing on exam subjects).
