These days, on the internet, IP addresses are how computers "phone" one another, and how your computer knows how to connect to a website you visit. So when you enter a website name in your browser's address bar (say,
http://PrivacyTests.org), your computer first sends that website name in a DNS request to a DNS resolver, which responds with the IP address for that website. Then your computer has the information it needs to connect to the website via its IP address.
