All it takes to be reminded of how much work remains in repairing the catastrophic damage done to America during the Age of Fiat is a single interaction with a large US institution: say, insurance, medical, or, most of all, government. The rot is so deep that it’s hard to imagine that it wasn’t always this way. But it wasn’t.
