Of the US military budget, only 23% goes to the army, and another 17% to defense-wide programs, for a total of 28% of branch-specific spending, or around 1% of GDP. Unless your country is as ridiculously navy-and-air-force-centric as the US is, your 1.5-2% military should be comparably strong to the US's per troop; if it's not, ask yourself why first before demanding other people's money.
