Remembering how in 2nd grade I got B instead of an A because I spelled color as colour. I had just started reading Redwall and I visually liked that spelling more than the US variant.
I remember being utterly flabbergasted that a teacher didn't know there were sometimes multiple ways to spell a word. No amount of arguing or showing her different spellings changed her mind. I think that was actually probably the moment I stopped trying in school: when I encountered someone unwilling to learn. Oops.
