what gets me about the aftermath of world war II is that the US *easily* could have removed the monarchy, turned Japan into a republic, and executed everyone responsible for war crimes. the US army occupied the entire country for 7 years.
it wasn't like they were trying to preserve the integrity of the Japanese army against the soviets or some realpolitk bullshit like that, the Japanese military *didn't exist*! disbanding the military and forming the "self-defense forces" was like, the one major change the US *did* in Japan!!
why the FUCK did they keep around Hirohito's dumb ass and install a massive clique of ultranationalist war criminals (the LDP)
