The gender breakdown of IT departments is something I've found interesting. These are my personal observations from a number of UK companies. The typical pattern is that most people at the entry grade are male, with up to a quarter female. The senior level will have a similar breakdown, but with a larger number of males who have remained at that level for some time or asked to be 'demoted' from team leader roles. There are usually still more male team leaders than female, but the proportion of females is a lot higher, often around 50%. Conversely technical specialists, who are people who have key knowledge and abilities, usually having been senior programmers or exceptionally team leaders for years, are almost exclusively male.

Now what is interesting is that the first management level grade and above tends to be over 50% female. At this grade you don't get to do any actual programming, and many males will not go forward for these positions, and some that do ask to be demoted again. This continues up to the CTO level, who is on the board of directors and appointed by the board. In some companies the boards are almost exclusively male and select a male. In others where they have signed up to diversity in the board it's often a woman.
