There's no actual evidence that we're anywhere near carrying capacity except in a few specific areas. We throw away the majority of food in Western countries. We also have plenty of undeveloped farmland, and vertical farming is still virtually unexplored.

We're going to get there naturally, and like all mammals, we probably have an instinct built in where we know when to stop reproducing. There's no need to force anything.
